The LMU Challenge

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) is one of the largest universities in Europe with more than 48,000 students, 700 professors and 3,600 academic staff. The University offers a wide range of courses in 150 subjects ranging from humanities to medicine, and includes options for interdisciplinary studies.

With limited IT staff and Infrastructure budget LMU needed a solution that was simple to administer, flexible enough to support student BYOD preferences, and allowed the university to allow students to share a common desktop platform while maintaining individual student data in a persistent manner.

The LMU Solution

To solve these issues, LMU turned to virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as a way to reduce the complexity of the diverse users and devices that connect to the university’s environment.

LMU conducted a feasibility study of VERDE, looking at both IT operations capabilities as well as the end user experience and determined it was the most effective and highest performing VDI solution for both audiences. After an evaluation of VMware and Citrix, LMU discovered VERDE, which, according to Werner Degenhardt, academic director and the CIO for the Faculty was the, “most seamlessly integrated with what we already had here. In fact, we experience that users fail to become aware if they are using a virtual desktop or a real desktop, or a mixture of both.”

The DOD Challenge

As the nation’s top government agency responsible for the security and safety of the nation’s citizens, the U.S. Department of Defense faces extraordinary challenges when it comes to day-to-day IT operations.  With security, performance, ease of use, and affordability as top priorities, the DoD needed a desktop solution that could support both Linux and Windows desktops across multiple locations, all within a high security computing environment.  Specific requirements were the ability to create highly secure enclaves that stayed in synch with a centralized infrastructure, high performance, low latency desktops, the ability to scale into the multiple thousands of managed desktops, and all of this with the lowest TCO possible.

The DOD Solution

The DoD saw VDI as the answer and sought a cost competitive, comprehensive solution that could scale to thousands of desktops, automate deployment and configuration, ensure a consistent user experience across geographically dispersed environments, and support multiple operating systems while addressing the need to maintain the highest level security challenges.

After evaluating all available products including Citrix, Red Hat and VMware, the DoD selected VERDE VDI because it was the only solution that could meet the totality of requirements for their virtual desktops across highly diversified branch locations. They were surprised to find that, in addition to meeting their stringent security and performance requirements, the VERDE VDI solution was also more than half the cost of lesser VDI offerings and exponentially easier to deploy. “VERDE VDI helps us reduce capital expenses by providing support for Windows thin clients running virtual Linux desktops. In addition, by enabling our department to move desktops into the secure data center and isolate access based on need or clearance level, the solution significantly improves security.”
